Class Updates and Reminders

Assalamu Alaikum,

We had a wonderful week alhamdulilah!

The first day after the March break, we talked about all the fun we had during our break, and shared with one another what our favourite part of the break was.

Writing/ Social Studies/ Art: On International Day, we sat on the carpet and discussed how we come from different countries, have different cultures and each student shared some of the things they do back home.

Students wrote about their culture and what they do in their country in their writing journals, and each student read their writing piece to the class. Then, we listened each person's national anthem, and we sang Oh Canada as a class :)

Students used scrap paper to design something special they like about their country (hina, deserts, food, celebrations...etc.) and we put all the crafts on a poster with the title "We are Different and Awesome!"

Reading: Students maintained stamina during read to self.

Math: We started our new unit about "2D Shapes".  We learned that 2D shapes have 2 dimensions (length and width), and we learned about some of their attributes, and where we can find them in real life (signs and more)

We also learned about polygons, quadrilaterals and that some shapes are symmetrical and others are not by completing worksheets, comparing their attributes in a Venn diagram and making different 2D shapes on Geoboards.

Computer Lab: Students sorted 2D shapes in a Venn diagram according to their attributes (quadrilaterals, symmetrical, polygons...Etc.)

Science/ Writing: We learned about "buoyancy ". We had a great time experimenting, writing our hypothesis and recording our results. On Monday students recorded their predictions about whether certain solids would end up floating or sinking in water. Then we put them in water and we recorded the results. The following day each student got to design something that would float in water using clay, they recorded their hypothesis, results and what they learned from the experiment. They also completed an informative piece "How To Writing" explaining how they designed the clay to make it float.

On Wednesday during our field trip, we learned more about the prosperities of solids, liquids and gasses. Students worked in groups with their group leaders to design an object that would float in water and carry 5 marbles. Each group was given different materials that each floated in water when placed alone. Masha'Allah they all did a great job!

Museum of Aviation: On Wednesday we had a fabulous time at the Museum of Aviation learning about the properties of matter, building objects that would float, and exploring amazing aircraft! Masha'Allah the 2As behaved beautifully! Way to go! I would like to thank our amazing volunteers for all their help and for making it a wonderful day! Jazakum Allahu Khairan :)

 Reminders:
  • Homework pack is due on Wednesday.
  • Students took home the spelling bee list words. Information about the spelling bee will be emailed to you isA.
I hope you are having a wonderful weekend!

Class Updates and Have a Great March Break!

Assalamu Alaikum,

We had a lovely week last week alhamdulilah!

Reading: Students maintained stamina while reading to self. Then, we sat on the carpet and students shared the author's purpose and what their books were about.

Spelling: We completed lesson 21 in our spelling books where we learned vowels with r.

Writing/Art: The 2As entered the Classdojo Monster Contest! We learned how Classdojo make their monsters, and students took a template where they had three trials to draw their monsters and write what they like about each one and what they would like to improve. Classdojo will turn their favourite three entries into real monsters in Classdojo, and one monster will be brought to life and featured in their next Big Idea video series!! On Friday we mailed our monsters to Classdojo! Masha'Allah the students did a wonderful job!

Math: We have been learning addition and subtraction with regrouping. Students worked in groups to add and subtract with regrouping, and they solved word problems in their math journals after we discussed and learned some strategies to solve word problems. On Friday we solved word problems though a great PowerPoint :)

Math Workshop: We had a wonderful math workshop where we had fun learning about coins, place value, fractions, clocks, and more! We had a fabulous time alhamdulilah!

Science: We learned about how some solids float and  others sink. Students completed a worksheet where they predicted which solids would float and which ones would sink. Then, they put the solids (crayon, pencil, glue stick, cotton ball and bottle cap) in water and recorded the results.

We also learned about mixtures. We learned that some solids (e.g. sugar) dissolve to make a solution. We made two mixtures as a class. One was sand and water, and the other was sugar and water. Then students recorded the results.

Kamilah made another mixture where she mixed water, vinegar and baking soda and the class noticed how there was a reaction!

Islamic Studies: Students learned about Prophet Mohamed (SAW) and his love for children.

Homework and Reminders:
  • Homework Pack (Experiment and math) is due on Wednesday, 03/23/2016.
  • Please send the field trip form if you have not done so on Monday 03/21/2016.
I hope you all have a fabulous March break isA!

Class Updates

Assalamu Alaikum,

Alhamdulilah we had a wonderful week!

Reading: On Monday Dr. Aisha read us 2 chapters of "Danny, The Champion of the World". Danny learned about his father's deep secret!

Sr. Madlein joined us on Wednesday and students had a great time making the covers of their reading logs. They each made a mind map to stick on the back of the reading log showing how they feel when listening to a story.

We maintained stamina during read to self :)

Writing: We did a GUESS WHO activity where students wrote about themselves, so their parents could guess which writing was their child's on Friday!

Science/Writing: We read about the properties of solids, and their different textures. After we learned about "How To" writing and that it is informative writing, each student came up with a building project, listed the solids needed, and wrote the steps of building the project. Then, they drew pictures of their projects. Masha'Allah students were very creative!

Math: We learned to add and subtract two digit numbers without regrouping by completing some worksheets and doing group work.

We also started addition with regrouping. Students worked in pairs to do some addition with regrouping and we did some on the whiteboard. IsA we will be doing more next week and I will be emailing you the introduction letter for our new unit.

Islamic Studies: We discussed how the Prophet (SAW) should always be our role model and some of the ways in which we can take him as a role model. Then students completed a graphic organizer showing how they would take the Prophet (SAW) as a role model.

Library: Tr. Nancy compared the two books she had read to the class, and showed students that there were similarities and differences.

Gym: We played a fun game with the parachute and balls where the students were divided into two teams and their task was to keep the balls on the opposite side of the parachute!

Students Led Conferences Practice: Students worked in pairs to present their work. We learned how to present our work, and how to learn from our mistakes and keep up the good work. Masha'Allah students worked hard practicing and were very responsible!

It was truly a pleasure seeing you all on Friday, and for those who could not make it, isA we can schedule an appointment so you can come meet with your child :)

Reminder:

There is no spelling quiz or homework pack this week! Have fun!

Have a great Sunday isA!
