Class Updates and Reminders

Assalamu Alaikum,

We had a fabulous day yesterday and today alhamdulilah!

Reading: We integrated our learning about reptiles into language by reading two nonfiction books about Turtles. We got to know many amazing facts about Green sea turtles and also learned rich verbs during reading.

Writing: Today we showed our knowledge of Green sea Turtles
by writing about them! Students wrote verbs on a turtle shell about turtles (dig, emerge, flea, swim, protect, escape, hatch...etc)  Then, they used the verbs to write sentences about turtles. After writing their sentences, students highlighted their verbs. They did a wonderful job MashaAllah!

Yesterday students maintained stamina during work on writing. They started off by choosing something that is special to them, and they made a mind map where they used as many adjectives as they could to describe their noun and how it makes them feel. Then, they wrote sentences using their adjectives.

Vocabulary: We are playing vocabulary games to become more familiar with the new vocabulary list we learned on Wednesday with Tr. Madlien .Yesterday we played BINGO where students listened carefully to the definition of a vocabulary word (e.g: Curious: to want to know about everything.) and once they figured out which word it was, they had to cover the word with the correct heart number.

Today we completed a word search, and students chose three words to define.

Gym: Yesterday we had a great time playing Sharks and Guards with the parachute!

Math: We are practicing reading bar graphs using a variety of worksheets. We learned the parts of a graph using an acronym called "TAILS" which stands for: title, axis, intervals, labels, and scale. Students wrote about TAILS in their math journals, they worked in groups to make a bar graph, and they worked independently to complete math worksheets where they made bar graphs and answered questions about them.

Social Studies: Yesterday students followed instructions to colour continents and they named the 5 oceans.

Art: Today students did a fabulous job making birds out of their coffee filters!

Message from Tr. Nancy

Dear Parents,

Assalamu Alaikum

The grade 2A students and I had a fun and productive library visit yesterday. We discussed the first step of the researching process, which is the planning stage. We talked about how long their project had to be, and what accompanying material they needed for their presentation. We let the students know that, in the planning stage, they need to choose their topic (they will choose either a bird or an insect to research). Because what we are doing in the library now is just practice, they will be choosing their bird or insect on Monday, and they will be made aware of the due date on Monday, insha
Allah. In addition, we discussed the need to narrow their topic. For instance, bird and insect are too broad, so they need to narrow their topic by choosing a specific bird or insect. Once the choice was made, I asked the grade 2A students to think of some questions regarding their topic using the 5ws + H.

We will be working on the bird/insect project during library period. I will be modeling each step for them. That means that I will be working on my own bird project at the same time as the students are; I will also be presenting my project along with them. Our goal in presenting the research process this way is to help the students familiarize themselves with the steps. As a result, they will not feel overwhelmed or stressed when they need to do a research project.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at nbrethour@abraarschool.com

Have a wonderful day, inshaAllah.
